Abstract

The Syrian War started in 2011 as a result of the Arab Spring, which shook the entire Arabian Peninsula. The Syrian War is considered one of the most devastating conflicts of recent times, as around 0.6 million people have lost their lives. This war has also created one of the biggest refugee crises in the world. There are various reports that in many cities in Syria, people are on the verge of starvation. The brutality of this war can be imagined, as some of the most important cities in the country have completely become ghost towns. The war has been continuing for the last 13 years, and there are still no visible signs that it will end soon. This paper will analyse this war from an international humanitarian law perspective. The paper will determine whether the international humanitarian laws outlined in the Four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their additional protocols were indeed adhered to during this conflict or not. The paper will discuss the role played by the United Nations in the Syrian war. The impact of this war on Syria’s economy will also be discussed.
