Main Article Content
Abstract
One of the most heinous gendered illnesses in human society, domestic abuse (physical, sexual, and emotional) makes people more susceptible to psychopathologies, which can cause physical illness. In eastern nations like India, where there are many domestic violence cases, the number of instances increases shockingly quickly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current article looks into instances of domestic violence against Indian women during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective of the current study was to determine any connections between Covid-19 and domestic abuse, as well as any possible causes for the rise in domestic abuse cases following the Covid-19 shutdown. To investigate the problems associated with the rise in domestic violence episodes during the COVID-19 lockdown period, newspapers that reported on the incidents and web publications were analyzed. To further explore the connections between Covid-19 and domestic violence, reports in scientific and popular literature about the rise of domestic violence during the required lockdown, its magnitudes, and the steps governments took to reduce the problems were also examined. Domestic abuse cases increased significantly during the COVID19 era compared to the years prior. Additionally, the number of cases increased in the early stages of the epidemic before steadily declining over time. The COVID-19 pandemic had an extreme and worse-than-expected effect on women. Using home confinement as a preventative measure to safeguard the health and wellbeing of the general public has made women's suffering from disease and domestic abuse worse.
