The Digitisation Imperative: Challenges and Strategic Responses for Organisations
Main Article Content
Abstract
By 2018, digitisation has emerged as an imperative that no organisation can afford to ignore. The convergence of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things is accelerating industrial transformation at a pace that rivals previous industrial revolutions. This article examines the key drivers of the digitisation imperative, including technological breakthroughs, globalisation and market disruption, and evolving regulatory frameworks such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It highlights the organisational challenges that hinder digital transformation, such as legacy systems, workforce reskilling, cybersecurity threats, cultural resistance, and ethical concerns. The article further identifies strategic responses that organisations must adopt to thrive in this new environment: visionary leadership, infrastructure modernisation, workforce inclusion and reskilling, data governance, organisational agility, and ecosystem collaboration. To ground the discussion, it analyses sectoral lessons from financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, construction, and the public sector. Finally, it explores broader implications for governance, sustainability, and the future of work. The central argument is that digitisation is not merely a technical upgrade but a comprehensive organisational and cultural transformation. Organisations must embrace it holistically to remain competitive and legitimate in the emerging digital economy.
