Abstract

The COVID-19 epidemic and lockdowns taught organizational agility. Working quickly and on multiple fronts, organizations have had to adapt their places of business to protect staff members and the general population, adjust to changes in consumer expectations, with new markets emerging overnight while others are falling off a cliff, make layoffs and navigate furlough programmes, and facilitate unprecedented working from home (WFH). Working from home and collaborative virtual teams are the most likely to last among the adjustments required. Many call it a forced homework ‘experiment’. As remote working technology became more ingrained over time, organizations were ready to make the switch, but many employers were still hesitant. Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer famously bucked the trend in 2013 by demanding a halt to WFH arrangements; this paper critically reviews this new HR Trend of remote working.
