The Status and Challenges of Legacy Waste Management in India: A literature reviews

Abstract
The unregulated disposal of municipal solid waste on huge land areas without effective management results in the collection of long-term old garbage known as legacy waste. Though the research to identify and solve the needs of municipal solid waste management began in the early 1990s. However, there exists a need to systematize the literature in the domain that focuses exclusively on developing the knowledge structure regarding the management of legacy waste. The present review collates various studies conducted in India and abroad concerning legacy waste management and attempts to develop pertinent recommendations. The review highlights societal, administrative, and financial perspectives regarding legacy waste management, and proposes sustainable solutions for this wicked problem having multifaceted adverse effects on the environment.
