Impact of Health and Safety Measures of Employees on their Performance: The Moderating Effect of Covid-19

Abstract

Introduction: The objective of health and safety programs is to reduce the hazards that occur in the workplace, including accidents, fires, injuries, and illnesses spreading through infections. If employees feel that they work in a safe environment, it helps boost their employee morale and productivity. The researcher in the study focused on how manufacturing employees' health and safety measures affect their workplace performance and whether the employees followed more precautionary safety protocols to safeguard their health because of Coronavirus disease.


Methods: The study's target population was manufacturing employees working in the locality of Ambattur Industrial Estate, Chennai, Tamilnadu. A total of 215 employees participated in the study. This study employed a descriptive research design.  The formulated hypotheses were tested using PLS-SEM with SmartPLS.


Results:  Composite reliability was employed to check the internal reliability of the factors, and it showed a value greater than 0.70 for each item in the constructs. For the validity of the study questionnaire, the average variance extracted was calculated, and the results indicated a value greater than 0.50. It is evident from the study that health and safety measures have an effect on employee performance.


Conclusion: Employees do not effectively perform their jobs as before the intervention of covid-19 and they are not productive in their tasks because of covid-19 and it is difficult for them to achieve the expected standards. The structural model that covid-19 negatively impacts employee performance.
